Crows – Rooks, Jackdaw, Magpie and Jay

The Crow (Corvidae) includes the Rook, Carrion and Hooded Crows, Jackdaw, Magpie and Jay all of which can cause damage.

In rural areas they will prey on eggs and the chicks of other birds in the spring. They will steal livestock feed which can result in lack of available food for young animals.

Jackdaws will nest in large numbers on city buildings causing damage by contamination from droppings and blocking chimneys thus a potential fire risk.

Magpies have been increasing in numbers, they are strong confident and known to bully other wildlife. In the spring they will seek out other wild bird’s eggs and eat young chicks.

Gulls

Common Gulls are increasing becoming a problem in coastal towns where they can become quite aggressive protecting their young by swooping “attacks” on the public.

Gulls have been known to snatch food from people, tear open rubbish sacks and make considerable noise. As with other birds who present themselves as pests they mess on buildings, pavements and vehicles.

The Herring and Black Headed Gulls are protected.

Feral Pigeons are very successful at finding food living on scraps, spillage and food given by the public. They will live close by to docks and mills feeding on grain spillage and even fly to farmland to feed on sowings and stubble. They will gather and fly in flocks varying in size from 50 to 400.

Damage by the Feral Pigeon in towns and cities can be considerable. They will nest on and in buildings bringing with them considerable mess, destruction and more seriously a health hazard to the public.

The Feral Pigeon can bring with it the transmission of airborne and foodborne disease to humans and other animals, insect and mite infestation, damage to structures and other property damage including considerable fouling.
